Rashawn Slater Extends Contract with Chargers

Rashawn Slater, regarded as one of the top left tackles in the NFL, has secured a lucrative extension with the Los Angeles Chargers. The team announced a four-year contract worth $114 million, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history, although the specifics of the financial terms weren’t detailed in the public announcement.

The new deal also includes a substantial $92 million signing bonus, which is quite impressive.

Slater was approaching the final year of his rookie contract, which included a fifth-year option due to his selection as the 13th overall pick in 2021. With this new contract, the Chargers have ensured that their quarterback Justin Herbert’s key protector will remain with the team long-term, quite possibly averting concerns over potential free agency. Interestingly, the option for the 2025 season was valued at $19 million.

Despite Slater’s solid performance, he faced challenges last year due to a biceps injury, limiting him to just three games in 2022. Nevertheless, he bounced back and played an entire season in 2023, earning a spot on the Pro Bowl team for the second time after a strong showing in 15 games.

It’s worth noting that while Slater excels in pass protection—he holds a remarkable pass-block grade of 90.4, ranking him third among eligible tackles—he is also known for his skills in the running game. This versatility is important as the Chargers look to improve their overall offensive strategy, especially with their current ranking at 20th in total offense per game.

In the upcoming season, the Chargers will be eager to build on their recent efforts under new head coach Jim Harbaugh, with Slater playing a crucial role in that ambition.
