Residents Rewarded for Reporting Illegal Fireworks in SLO County
As the Fourth of July approaches, residents of San Luis Obispo County have a new incentive to help combat illegal fireworks sales — cash rewards.
The sheriff’s office in SLO County announced on Wednesday that they’re collaborating with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to enforce regulations against the possession, sale, and use of illegal fireworks in the area.
Through this initiative, community members can earn rewards of up to $500 for tips that lead to the discovery or arrest of illegal fireworks vendors. This effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance safety as the holiday draws near.
“Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $500 for information leading to the identification and arrest of individuals in possession of illegal fireworks for sale,” a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office stated.
These illegal fireworks not only pose risks to public safety but can also result in fires, injuries, and property damage. They’re particularly distressing for pets, livestock, veterans, and others sensitive to loud noises, as highlighted in the announcement.
This crackdown is a response to an incident last year when illegal fireworks ignited a fire that destroyed the historic Templeton Feed and Grain Store. Following this, an adult and a 16-year-old were charged with driving to Bakersfield to purchase these fireworks for resale in SLO County.
Moreover, in July 2025, a catastrophic explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Yolo County claimed the lives of seven workers and injured two, in addition to sparking a wildfire that burned 78 acres. Such events underline the need for vigilance against illegal fireworks.
Authorities encourage anyone with information about illegal fireworks to report them by calling 805-549-7867 or 805-781-1933.
