Slotkin: 'Republicans are promoting anti-immigrant hostility as a strategy'

Sen. Elissa Slotkin Discusses Immigration Policies

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) criticized what she calls the Republican Party’s strategy of promoting anti-immigrant sentiment. She voiced concerns that Democrats are hesitant to take a strong position on the matter.

“I think most Americans recognize what migrants need for their growth and to keep the economy afloat. They want these individuals to come through legitimate and vetted channels. It’s something Congress can address,” she remarked.

Slotkin elaborated, stating, “Republicans use anti-immigrant hostility as part of their policy framework, and Democrats seem worried about upsetting either immigrant communities or segments of the left.”

She added, “There’s this narrative that not everyone can reside in the United States. Like any other nation, we’re facing challenges at our borders.”

Slotkin noted that enforcing strict rules regarding immigration tends to make many of her Democratic colleagues quite anxious.

Recent polling indicates a decline in President Trump’s approval rating concerning immigration, which has plummeted to 41%—the lowest since his return to office. A Reuters/Ipsos survey revealed that roughly half of the participants disapproved of how the president has handled his significant immigration policies.

The Trump administration’s immigration measures have provoked strong opposition from the left, leading to protests against Congress’s immigration operations and highlighting issues around the practices of immigration enforcement and detention centers.

Slotkin emphasized that Democrats must be careful in their approach to advocacy strategies that target Latino voters. “A considerable amount of discussion has focused on advocacy groups that don’t necessarily represent the majority of voters,” she pointed out during her interview. “We witnessed real-time evidence in the last election that we didn’t experience a significant shift toward Trump among Latino voters. Some of these organizations claimed to speak for immigrant communities, but that clearly wasn’t the case.”
