Slotkin: Trump is starting to understand the shutdown following the Democrats’ victories

Slotkin: Trump 'finally clicking in to the shutdown' after Democrats' wins

Sen. Slotkin Optimistic on Government Shutdown Negotiations

Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan expressed optimism regarding the potential for ending the government shutdown. This positive outlook follows President Trump’s acknowledgment on Wednesday that the ongoing deadlock might negatively impact Republicans in the upcoming election.

“I think the president was quite frank this morning about his losses and accepted some hard truths—something I doubt many Republicans in the room wanted to publicly admit,” Slotkin shared during an interview on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes.”

Slotkin observed that the seriousness of the shutdown seems to be weighing on the president, which might facilitate an unusually prolonged conflict between both congressional parties.

“And he seemed to finally reach a conclusion,” she added. “This is critical for me because negotiating happens with those who hold the decision-making power, right? Donald Trump is very much about ‘the art of the deal.’ He effectively informs the Republican Party if a deal is achievable.”

Slotkin emphasized, “For those of us eager to bring an end to the government shutdown, it’s essential to be in discussions with the key decision-maker. So, I’m pleased that he was open to that.”

On Wednesday, President Trump convened Republican senators at the White House to reflect on the election results and the government shutdown. He acknowledged it was a difficult night for the GOP and reiterated his call for the party to eliminate the filibuster, allowing simple majority votes on legislation.

Trump remarked, “We didn’t expect to win last night. It was a very Democratic area, and I don’t think it was favorable for the Republican Party. I mean, I’m not sure it benefited anyone, but we had an interesting night and gained valuable insights.”

He claimed that polls indicate the government shutdown has been detrimental to the Republican Party and hinted at the impact of his absence from the ballot.

In response, White House press secretary Abigail Jackson pointed fingers at Democrats for the ongoing situation. “The only reason the government remains shut down is that Democrats chose to hold the American public hostage to push their extreme agenda for free healthcare for illegal immigrants. American families are losing paychecks and benefits due to Democrat irresponsibility. President Trump wants to reopen the government, and Democrats can do so whenever they choose—now would be a good time,” Jackson stated.

A recent NBC News poll revealed that 52% of voters hold President Trump and the Republican Party responsible for the shutdown, with 42% attributing blame to Democrats.

Democrats are currently resisting a Republican plan to reopen the government unless it includes assurances to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies that are set to expire at year’s end, as failure to do so would lead to increased health insurance costs for millions of Americans.
