Police Chase Ends in Fire Outside Kansas City
A slow-speed police chase on the outskirts of Kansas City, Missouri, took a dramatic turn Sunday night when the suspect’s truck flipped and caught fire, as seen in footage from a deputy’s camera.
According to video recorded around 11:20 p.m., the suspect abandoned his vehicle in a wooded area behind a home and fled on foot, as smoke poured from the pickup. It wasn’t long before flames erupted, spreading quickly from the driver’s side of the truck.
“That feeling you get when the suspect you were trying to catch takes off on foot, his truck catches fire and explodes, knocking it out of gear and rolling into an empty patrol car,” the Clay County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post featuring the incident video.
Deputies Pursue and Extinguish Fire
After exiting his vehicle, a deputy chased the suspect on foot. The Kansas City Fire Department arrived shortly after to handle the fire.
Fortunately, authorities reported that no one was injured, as the truck was unoccupied and ignited in a field. “And we took the suspect into custody,” the sheriff’s office added.
Local reports indicated that officers first encountered the driver during a traffic stop due to his car lacking a license plate. Witnesses described the vehicle as “unsteady,” suggestive of possible intoxication. When requested to exit the truck, he accelerated, reaching speeds of around 45 miles per hour.
In a twist, another deputy arrived, secured the vehicle by chocking its tires, and managed to move his patrol car out of danger, though another fire ignited shortly thereafter.
The sheriff’s office did not immediately provide details regarding potential charges against the suspect, whose identity remains unknown.
