Sly Stone, Influential Musician, Passes Away at 82
Iconic musician Sly Stone passed away on Monday at the age of 82.
Stone leaves behind a rich legacy of hits and will always be seen as one of the most impactful artists from the late 60s to the early 80s. He made his mark across several music genres, including rock, pop, funk, and soul. His death has been attributed to a prolonged battle with COPD and other underlying health issues, as mentioned in a statement on his official Instagram account.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved dad, Sly Stone of Sly and the Family Stone,” the family shared. He died peacefully, surrounded by his three children, a close friend, and his extended family. While his absence is deeply felt, they find comfort in knowing that his remarkable musical legacy will inspire future generations.
The family also revealed that Stone had recently finished the screenplay of his life story, a project they are keen to share in the future, according to reports.
Stone captivated both Black and white audiences with his energizing performances. His popular tracks, like “Dance to the Music” and “Everyday People,” achieved significant chart success.
His passion for music ignited in childhood, where he began creating music with his siblings before forming his own band, Sly & the Family Stone, in 1966. Throughout his career, he produced hits such as “Life,” “Stand,” and “Hot Fun in the Summertime.” His music had a way of addressing life’s hardships while encouraging listeners to rise above challenges.
The band’s performance of “I Want to Take You Higher” at Woodstock in 1969 was a groundbreaking moment, followed closely by another hit, “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).” Despite facing a difficult period dealing with drug addiction, Stone constantly turned to music during his recovery journey.
His influence has extended to numerous artists, including Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Prince, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, all of whom have covered songs by Sly & the Family Stone.
In February, a documentary titled “Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius)” was released by Questlove, focusing on Stone’s career. The music community has come together in mourning upon learning of his passing, with fans and loved ones paying tributes across social media to honor a legendary figure who will always be remembered.
