Smith's aide: Lee took advantage of Minnesota deaths to make cruel comments about Democrats

Political Tensions Following Tragic Shootings

Senator Tina Smith (D-Minn.) expressed deep frustration in a strongly worded email to Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) after he criticized the political left in connection to the shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers over the weekend.

In the email, drafted by Ed Shelby, Smith’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Shelby stated, “I think it’s essential for you to understand the additional pain caused by your remarks following such a horrific and terrifying weekend.”

He continued, questioning the appropriateness of using Lee’s Senate platform to mock what had occurred. “Was it a successful day for Team Lee? Are you proud of what you contributed over the weekend?”

State Senator Melissa Hortman was tragically shot alongside her husband, while State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also attacked. The alleged shooter, 57-year-old Vance Bolter, reportedly had a list of at least 45 lawmakers, which included Smith.

In the aftermath, Lee posted various tweets denouncing the shootings. One tweet featured a masked figure at a lawmaker’s home, with a caption implying the chaos stemmed from a leftist ideology. He also shared an image of the suspect alongside the caption “Nightmare on Waltz Street,” clearly referencing Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz (D).

Discussion around Bolter’s motivations suggested some alignment with right-wing sentiments, particularly in support of former President Trump. However, there were conflicting views regarding the influence of leftist ideology on these tragic events.

In Shelby’s email, he criticized Lee for seemingly trivializing the murders of dedicated public servants. “Did you think it was appropriate to amplify such behavior? Where’s your sense of decency?” he wrote.

Lee’s office didn’t respond promptly to requests for comments. However, they stated that the official Senate account condemned violence in general.

Later, Smith confronted Lee in the Senate hallway about his tweets. She indicated that while their conversation felt a bit vague, it seemed as though Lee was taken aback by her confrontation.

When asked for comments on their interaction, Smith’s office did not reply immediately.

Before this exchange, Lee engaged with Elon Musk on Twitter, affirming Musk’s claims about violence associated with the far-left following the shooting incidents.

In an effort to promote unity, Shelby urged Lee’s office to recognize colleagues as human beings rather than adversaries. He described Hortman as someone who embodied strength and humanity, urging for a more measured response on social media.
