Smithsonian’s Trump Removal Sparks Controversy
The Smithsonian faced backlash after it temporarily removed references to former President Donald Trump from a current exhibition, which led to a response from the White House.
According to the Washington Post, the National Museum of American History made the changes related to Trump in July. An anonymous source indicated that the Smithsonian adjusted the exhibition following pressure from the White House to revise its display.
A spokesperson for the White House criticized the Smithsonian, saying it focused on exhibits that are somewhat disconnected from what the general public sees as representative of mainstream America. “The Smithsonian should embrace American greatness,” he stated, emphasizing that the Trump administration supports an update to the museum’s exhibits that would unite the nation.
A Smithsonian representative clarified that the updates were part of a broader review concerning the museum’s historical content. This review apparently revealed the need for adjustments, particularly in the section about the limits of presidential power. The spokesman noted that certain aspects of that section had not been updated since 2008, prompting the revisions.
Previously, a temporary label related to Trump’s presidency had been in place since September 2021 but remained until this recent change. This label provided context on Trump’s impeachment and drew parallels with past presidents who faced similar challenges.
The ongoing debate gained traction in the media, with various commentators expressing concern over what they termed an attempt to alter historical narratives. Senator Chris Coons called it “unsettling,” while others voiced fears that it could lead to a skewed understanding of American history.
Adding to the discussion, the Trump administration demanded that the Smithsonian refrain from funding practices they argued promote a biased perspective of American history. A White House official stated that taxpayer money should not support institutions that undermine unity or present history in a divisive manner.
