SMU wide receiver Teddy Knox won’t be stepping foot on a football field anytime soon.
Knox was released by the school on Thursday after being notified that Dallas police had issued an arrest warrant for the receiver for his involvement in a March 30 multi-vehicle crash that also involved Chiefs wide receiver Laci Rice. He was suspended from school.
“SMU takes these allegations seriously.” SMU said in a statement. “Federal student privacy laws prevent the university from discussing the details of student disciplinary proceedings.”
Knox and Rice are suspected of being the drivers of two luxury sports cars at the center of a multi-vehicle crash on U.S. 75.
Mr. Rice’s attorney, Royce West, said last week that the NFL receiver admitted to authorities that he was behind the wheel of the Lamborghini SUV and that Mr. Knox is believed to be the driver of the Corvette.
Rice faces eight charges, including aggravated assault, stemming from the incident, and Knox’s arrest warrant lists similar charges against the university receiver.
“We have cooperated fully with law enforcement.” Knox’s attorney, Deandra Gantt, told The Dallas Morning News in an email. “Other than that, we have no further comment at this time.”
It is unclear whether Ms. Knox turned herself in, but Ms. Rice surrendered to police on Thursday night.
The accident occurred at around 75:30 local time on a northbound trip when a Corvette and a Lamborghini sped out of control and a total of six cars were involved in the accident.
The six people in the Corvette and Lamborghini left the crime scene, and police found marijuana in both cars, along with credit cards, checks, a diamond chain and a Chiefs playbook.
Two people were taken to the hospital as a result of this accident.
Knox is in his third season at SMU, where Rice also played college football.
