SNAP Benefits at Risk Amid Government Shutdown
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) held a press conference on Friday, marking the 31st day of the government shutdown. He stated that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will be exhausted this weekend, attributing this to Democrats’ repeated votes to maintain the shutdown—14 times, to be precise.
Johnson claimed that if there had been a viable way to sustain the program, President Trump would have made it happen. However, he argued that Democrats are using Americans as political pawns, leading to a stoppage of SNAP distributions.
“If there was a way to fund SNAP during a Democratic shutdown, I’m confident the commander-in-chief would do it, but we’re reaching a breaking point right now,” he expressed.
He emphasized that millions of American families depend on SNAP, explaining, “About one in eight people in this country relies on it to literally put food on the table.”
According to an update from the USDA, benefits are set to end on November 1st, with Senate Democrats close to a tipping point. The statement highlighted a disconnect: they can prioritize undocumented immigrants while failing to ensure that mothers and vulnerable individuals receive necessary nutritional support.
Johnson placed the responsibility squarely on Democratic senators, who he said have repeatedly voted against essential services. He reminded everyone that the shutdown impacts real families. “When those resources are depleted, they rely on them, and yet Democrats continue to play politics in Washington while people sit around dinner tables without the resources they need,” he asserted, reiterating that the Trump administration is striving to keep the program afloat.
“But we’re at a breaking point here. So what are Democrats doing today? Where are Democrats? Are they in the Senate today? No, they’re campaigning as critical SNAP benefits dry up,” he lamented, suggesting that Democrats have “run out of town” and “abandoned their jobs in the Senate.”
Johnson further stressed that the Senate is the last hope to resolve this issue and restart the government before many Americans face hunger. He expressed disbelief that Democrats are attempting to place the blame on Republicans, even though they have consistently proposed clean continuing resolutions (CRs).
“They are now trying to blame Republicans for cutting SNAP, even though it was Democrats who voted against it 14 times. Remember, Republicans supported SNAP every single time. Those same Democrats, who had no qualms about defunding SNAP and WIC for over a month, are suddenly claiming that Republicans and President Trump can’t just fix it with a wave of a magic wand,” he said. “It’s a mess of their own making, and the solution is simple: return to Washington, D.C., and vote to reopen the government.”
