“Saturday Night Live” mocked Vice President Kamala Harris' sit-down interview with Fox News' Bret Bayer last week, criticizing her response to her first-ever combative sit-down with Fox News. Painted favorably.
In the skit, actor Alec Baldwin, appearing for the first time since his acquittal of manslaughter, took off Trump's wig to mock Baier's aggressive questioning of Harris, 60.
“Thank you, Brett,” comedian Maya Rudolph said at the opening, her voice very similar to the vice president's. “That joy is not ours.”
“When I interviewed President Trump, the first thing I asked him was, what do you think is the most important issue facing this country? So my first question to you is , can you tell me exactly how many murderers you've let get away with in this country?'' Baldwin's Baier asked.
In fact, Baier interviewed the 78-year-old Trump last June during the Republican presidential primary.
At the time, Mr. Baier was highly praised by media commentators for his criticism of Mr. Trump.
His first question to Harris was really:“How many illegal immigrants do you estimate your administration has released into this country over the past three and a half years?”
During a recent interview with Harris, Baier was intent on preventing her from filibustering, interrupting her at times in an attempt to get past talking points.
Mr. Harris's representatives were scrambling behind the scenes to shorten the amount of time Mr. Baier had to interview VEP. Baier said she was sometimes late for an interview.
Baldwin scoffed at Baier's question about why so many people were willing to vote for his rival, despite his campaign's stern warnings against him.
“Are you saying those who voted for Trump are misguided? Are they stupid?” Baldwin's Baier asked.
“Oh, I would never say that,” Rudolph retorted.
“Are they stupid who can't think for themselves?” Are they stupid? Baldwin followed.
Later, he chided her for simply looking for a viral moment. That was Mr. Baier's post-interview assessment, and he thought she might have been successful.
“I'm not looking for a viral moment,” Rudolph said, then turned to the side and spoke to the camera for a fake TikTok clip. “You know how I don't let men get in the way of my answers? I'm very modest. I'm very careful.”
The interview between Mr. Baier and Mr. Harris drew about 8 million viewers, the network said. That made this interview one of the highest-rated political interviews of the 2024 election cycle.
Baldwin's return to SNL comes after a judge in July dismissed manslaughter charges against Baldwin in connection with the 2021 shooting on the set of the movie “The Last,” which resulted in the death of cinematographer Halina Hutchins. It will be the first time.
Baldwin was adamant that he had a fired prop revolver but did not know it was loaded with live ammunition. The judge overseeing the case ruled that prosecutors withheld evidence.
