SNL came under fire after discussing the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson for nearly a minute and a half, including America's interest in the appearance of the alleged shooter.
“As the search continues for the assassin who shot and killed the CEO of UnitedHealthcare on Wednesday, it really says something about America that a man was killed in cold blood. And the main reaction is, 'Yeah. 'Medical care stinks!' And, 'Girl, that gunman is hot,'” co-host Colin Jost quipped.
“New York City police apparently captured a man on camera flirting with a female employee at a local hostel, reportedly using his name as “Lucky S. Beshalive,'' and took a photo of the suspect smiling. '' co-host Michael Che joked.
Mr. Jost also targeted officials, particularly the NYPD.
“This week, New York City officials sent a tough message on crime: 'If you shoot someone in the middle of the street, you better get on your bike, jump on the bus, and get the hell out of here, Mister.'” started.
“It's also pretty crazy that the shooting happened three blocks from here in broad daylight and the man left on his bike. Probably because all the police officers in the city are guarding the Christmas tree.” said Jost, referring to the lighting of the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas tree that took place on the same day.
“The NYPD currently believes the suspect left the city on a bus from the Port Authority. Thank you, but the search has actually widened as the Port Authority passenger appears to be the killer.” Jost said as a final joke on the topic. Additionally, many viewers found the segment funny, with some enjoying the Port Authority jokes.
Many users took to social media to criticize the joke, calling it insensitive to Thompson's family.
“Horrifying. This segment was not available for viewing. The victim's family and friends are saddened right now,” one person wrote under a YouTube clip of the segment.
“Agreed. I don't usually watch SNL, but when I see the corners and comments supporting it, I know I won't watch it anymore. I really hate it when people make jokes like that about someone's murder… The family is grieving right now,” one person replied.
Thompson, 50, was ambushed and killed as he walked from his Midtown hotel to the annual investor conference at the Hilton across the street.
