Soccer’s Hidden Dangers Highlighted in Thailand Incident

Soccer doesn’t often get recognized for being a perilous sport. With minimal safety gear, the field can be a chaotic place. In fact, it’s not just players you need to watch out for; sometimes even the lawn maintenance equipment can pose a threat.

Recently, a player in Thailand experienced this firsthand, and thankfully, it was all caught on camera.

Andros Townsend, who has previously played in the English Premier League for teams like Crystal Palace and Everton, is currently competing with Thai club PT Prachuap.

The first half of the game had just concluded during a match against Pattani when a crew member, operating a lawn roller, committed a major faux pas by driving over the players warming up on the field. This is, or should be, common knowledge in terms of turf management: avoid running into the athletes.

It was a pretty alarming moment, but luckily Townsend came out unscathed. In fact, he seemed to manage it better than many players do when they merely feel a forearm brush past them! Remarkably, he even played later in the match.

I can’t help but wonder—was the grounds crew really so behind schedule that they had to roll the lawn right in the middle of warm-ups? I’m no expert on turf care, but it seems like that task should’ve been taken care of earlier in the day. Even if the grass needed a little trimming to stay neat, maybe waiting until the field was clear would have been wiser.

Perhaps something unexpected necessitated the lawn work during the game, but if that’s the case, it’s essential to be prepared to stop when a player sprints down the field.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen in this instance.

At least Townsend was ready when his number was called and managed to enter the game as a substitute. His team ultimately secured a victory, but this incident has sparked an investigation into the grounds crew’s oversight.
