A British woman who immigrated to the US to live with soccer player Indiana Vassilev was left fighting for her life after being caught in the crossfire of a hit-and-run in Missouri.
Ellie Bentley, 22, was hit by a car and dragged two blocks during a shooting in St. Louis late last month. The Sun reports.
The Englishman, who crossed the pond last year to join MLS side St. Louis FC alongside current ex-Vasilev, sustained multiple fractures and had to undergo several reconstructive surgeries.
She spent two weeks recovering in intensive care and was discharged over the weekend.
“She was dragged under the car and was pretty sure she was going to die,” Bentley’s attorney Ben Tobin told the publication.
“The whole time she was just lying there trying to do everything she could to not get thrown under the wheel.”
“She ducked behind another car until the shooting stopped, but then the person in the car she was hiding in slammed his car to the floor, hit her, ran her over, and dragged her for several blocks. ” he added.
A St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department official told the program that an unidentified 35-year-old man opened fire, injuring a 25-year-old man who was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
Police say the driver who hit the Bentley has been arrested, but the suspect in the shooting remains at large.
It is believed the ordeal escalated after the group tried to get into the wrong car.
Bentley was getting out of his car near his home in St. Louis when he found himself caught in the crossfire.

Bentley, originally from Nottingham, England, moved to St. Louis last year after his then-girlfriend Vasilev, 23, joined MLS from Premier League team Aston Villa.
