Social Security Administration to require more in-person visits

Those who cannot use online identity probing tools will need to immediately visit their local Social Security Agency in person to prove their identity, the Social Security Agency (SSA) said Tuesday.

“Over the next two weeks, SSA will carefully move towards stronger personal information proofing procedures, both in benefits claims and direct deposit changes,” the statement said.

“Individuals seeking these services that cannot use their personal 'my Social Security' accounts that require online proof of identity must visit the local Social Security Agency to directly prove their identity,” he continued.

The change was intended to “protect social security records and interests against fraudulent activities,” and the agency said it came into effect on March 31.

To avoid long lines at social security offices across the country, agents recommend calling for people to request in-person appointments “to initiate and complete claims in one interaction.”
