Social Security: Many Americans Will Receive Two Payments in December

December Payments for SSI Recipients

In December, millions of Americans who depend on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are set to receive two federal payments, thanks to the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) payment calendar and the timing of federal holidays.

The second payment, which is scheduled for December 31, isn’t actually a bonus or an extra benefit. Due to New Year’s Day being a federal holiday, the typical January 2026 payment will be made earlier than usual.

Why This Matters

About 75 million Americans rely on Social Security and SSI for vital financial support, making these programs crucial safety nets in the country.

This alteration in payment timing coincides with a planned 2.8% cost of living adjustment (COLA) set to begin in 2026. It aims to assist elderly individuals and those with disabilities in managing inflation. Being aware of these changes can help beneficiaries prepare better and reduce misunderstandings about payment schedules.

Key Information

The SSA sends out payments monthly, but the exact timing can differ based on specific eligibility criteria for recipients. Here’s the December 2025 payment schedule:

  • Monday, December 1st: SSI payment for December
  • Wednesday, December 3rd: Social Security payments for those who also get SSI
  • Wednesday, December 10th: Social Security payments for individuals born from the 1st to the 10th
  • Wednesday, December 17th: Payments for those born between the 11th and 20th
  • Wednesday, December 24th: Payments for individuals born between the 21st and 31st
  • Wednesday, December 31st: SSI payment for January 2026, paid early due to the January 1st federal holiday

This means that SSI recipients will get two payments within December 2025: one on December 1st and another on December 31st.

The Social Security Administration explained that if the first of the month lands on a weekend or holiday, recipients will typically receive their SSI payment on the last business day before that date. So, yes, it’s possible to have two SSI payments in one month. Importantly, this doesn’t mean you’ll receive a duplicate payment from the previous month, so no need to panic and reach out about it.

Furthermore, federal SSI payment limits for 2026 will adjust to $994 for individuals, $1,491 for couples, and $498 for essential individuals, thanks to the 2.8% COLA increase.

Understanding Social Security and SSI

It’s crucial to differentiate between Social Security and SSI, as they serve different purposes and have unique eligibility criteria. Social Security mostly benefits retirees, the disabled, and survivors of deceased workers, based on their work history and contributions through payroll taxes.

On the other hand, SSI is designed for people with limited income and resources who are elderly, blind, or disabled, irrespective of their work history. Funded by general tax revenue rather than Social Security taxes, SSI payments are generally lower than Social Security benefits. So, while Social Security is closely tied to employment and contributions, SSI provides a necessary safety net for those in financial distress.

Early Payments for 2026

  • Friday, January 30th: Early SSI payments for February 2026 since February 1st is a Sunday
  • Friday, February 27th: Early SSI payments for March 2026 due to March 1st being a Sunday
  • Friday, July 31st: Early SSI payment for August 2026 because August 1st lands on a Saturday
  • Friday, October 30th: Early SSI payments for November 2026 since November 1st is a Sunday
  • Thursday, December 31st: Early SSI payment for January 2027 because of the January 1st federal holiday

Opinions on the Change

The Social Security Administration’s Secretary, Frank J. Bisignano, remarked on the annual increase, noting, “Social Security is a promise kept, and annual cost-of-living adjustments are one way we work to ensure benefits reflect today’s economic realities and continue to provide a foundation of security. Cost-of-living adjustments are a critical part of how Social Security fulfills its mission.”

What’s Next

The SSA intends to mail out and distribute individual notifications in December, providing information about the new COLA-adjusted benefit amounts that will commence in January 2026. Individuals can access these notifications online through their Social Security accounts and are urged to opt for electronic messaging for quicker updates.
