Some Social Security beneficiaries will see their monthly payments arrive a bit earlier than usual next week.
Why Does This Matter?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) supports millions of Americans each month, providing essential income for retirees and those with disabilities. Given the large number of beneficiaries, the timing of payments can be inconsistent, with different individuals receiving their checks at various times throughout the month.
Generally, benefits are distributed around the same time each month; however, payment dates often shift because of weekends and public holidays.
What to Expect
Supplementary Security Income (SSI) payments for individuals with disabilities or blindness—and for those over 65 who meet specific financial criteria—are typically scheduled for the first day of the month.
This September, however, payments will arrive a day earlier, on Friday, August 29th, because September 1st falls on Labor Day, a national holiday.
The SSA explains, “If the first day of the month is a weekend or federal holiday, you will receive your SSI payment on the business day before.” So, in this case, beneficiaries will receive two SSI payments within the same month.
It’s important to note that while this ensures you won’t have to wait until the start of the month for your payment, it does not mean you will get duplicate payments for the previous month, so there’s no need to reach out to the SSA about it.
Also, SSI payments will be slightly early again in November, which relates to the typical payment schedules around weekends and holidays in December, considering January 1st is another public holiday.
The SSA suggests waiting three business days before contacting them if your payments don’t arrive as expected, as they do not process transactions on weekends or holidays.
Other Payment Dates for September
For those receiving different types of benefits—like retirement, spouse, or survivor benefits—the payment schedule generally follows a standard plan. Most beneficiaries receive their payments based on their date of birth, but for individuals collecting since May 1997 or those on SSI, retirement checks will be issued at the start of September.
Here are the upcoming payment dates for September:
- Wednesday, September 3rd: Payments for retirement, spouse, survivor benefits, and those on SSI.
- Wednesday, September 10th: Payments for retirement, spouse, and survivor benefits for individuals born between the 1st and 10th of the month.
- Wednesday, September 17th: Payments for those born between the 11th and 20th.
- Wednesday, September 24th: Payments for individuals with birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
