Many Americans counting on their Social Security checks will find that this week is silent—not due to any issues, but simply because of the payment schedule.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) 2025 calendar indicates that benefits won’t be disbursed during one of the two calendar weeks this year, specifically from May 5th to 10th.
Why does it matter?
According to SSA data from 2024, approximately 68.5 million Americans receive some form of Social Security payment.
These individuals are accustomed to regular weekly payments, and there are only two weeks in the year when these checks aren’t sent out. The next such week will be from August 4th to 9th.
Even planned breaks in payments can create anxiety for those who depend on these regular deposits. While a week without a payment might feel like a delay, it’s just how the monthly distributions are arranged.
What’s the setup?
The SSA follows a specific schedule for distributing benefits based on recipients’ birth dates.
Those born between the 1st and 10th of the month will typically receive payments on the third Wednesday (in 2025, that’s May 14th), while those born from the 11th to the 20th will get theirs on the following Wednesday (May 21st). If someone’s birthday falls after the 20th, they can expect their check on the fourth Wednesday (May 28th).
This means the first week of May won’t have any designated payment dates.
For individuals who started receiving benefits by May 1997, payments are made on the third of each month, which happened to fall last week in May 2025.
This scheme repeats annually, though the total annual payments stay the same.
What are the responses?
During a celebration of Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office, Social Security Deputy Committee Lee Dudek expressed pride in the SSA employees’ efforts, highlighting their commitment to safeguarding Social Security.
“Our team has worked tirelessly to grasp the urgency of this situation and to rebuild public trust. While much work remains, it’s clear that the SSA is making vital changes to enhance its service to the public while protecting hardworking American taxpayers,” Dudek stated.
What’s next?
The next round of Social Security payments will occur on May 14th, 21st, and 28th, depending on each recipient’s birthdate. The SSA encourages beneficiaries to verify their official calendars and stay informed to avoid any confusion.
Additionally, the SSA advises anyone who hasn’t received their monthly payment on time to wait three business days before reaching out to an agent, noting that Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays do not count as business days.
