Upcoming Social Security Payments

The Social Security Administration is set to issue two payments to select beneficiaries this October.

This is due to the schedule that affects the timing of payments. Essentially, those receiving supplemental security income (SSI) will see two payments this month—one on Thursday, October 1st, and another on Friday, October 30th. Typically, payments for October cover the month of November as well, but October’s payment schedule is impacted when the first of the month falls on a holiday or weekend. Hence, beneficiaries will get two SSI checks this month instead of in November.

Looking ahead, recipients can expect two SSI payments in December too. The first will occur on Monday, December 1st, while the second will be on Wednesday, December 31st, continuing into the new year starting January 1st, 2026.

About 7.5 million individuals receive SSI monthly, with around 2.4 million being 65 or older. These payments specifically assist older adults, those who are blind or disabled, and individuals with very limited financial means to qualify—generally requiring one to be at least 65 years old or meet specific conditions regarding disability and income.

Understanding Social Security Payments

Social Security payments are structured according to the beneficiary’s birth date. For instance, those born between the 1st and the 10th of any month are paid on the third Wednesday, while those born from the 11th to the 20th receive their payments on the third Wednesday of that month, and those born between the 21st and 31st receive theirs on the last Wednesday. Individuals who began receiving Social Security before 1997, or those receiving both SSI and Social Security, have different disbursement schedules, typically on the first and third of the month.

Cost-of-Living Adjustment Announcement in October

October will also bring significant news for Social Security beneficiaries. The Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2026 will be announced around October 15th, which is determined by the percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for urban wage workers and clerical workers (CPI-W) over the summer months of July, August, and September.

Current forecasts predict a 2.7% increase based on available data, expected to take effect in 2026.
