Connecticut Socialite’s Court Appearance in Murder Case
A well-known socialite from Connecticut, who was convicted for assisting her boyfriend in hiding the murder of Jennifer Dulos—a mother of five—made an appearance in court on Monday as she seeks to be released from prison.
Michel Troconis received a 20-year prison sentence in 2024 after being found guilty in May 2019 of aiding Fotis Dulos, the victim’s estranged husband, in planning and covering up the murder of Jennifer Dulos.
Troconis’ legal team claims her conviction should be overturned due to poor legal counsel from her previous attorney. A report from NBC Connecticut mentioned this argument.
During the hearing, Troconis’ former defense lawyer, Andy Bowman, faced intense questioning regarding why he allowed her to speak with police multiple times after a discussion with prosecutor Richard Colangelo in 2019.
Bowman testified, “She’s innocent… There was an urgency because they were threatening to file murder charges if the body was found.” Ultimately, he emphasized, it was Troconis’ choice to speak with authorities.
Her current legal team contends that she was unaware of conversations between Bowman and the prosecutors and that he failed to explain the consequences of her discussions with police.
Statements made by Troconis to investigators were later used against her at trial.
Troconis’ legal team must now demonstrate that her rights were violated due to ineffective legal representation, leading to her conviction for conspiracy to commit murder, evidence tampering, and hindering prosecution.
Bowman denied any claims suggesting his clients were convicted because of his inadequate legal advice.
The judge handling this case has 120 days to make a decision regarding Troconis’ request for release. If the ruling favors her, the conviction could be overturned, leaving prosecutors to decide whether to retry her.
Further hearings are scheduled for January 9th and January 16th.
In a related note, Troconis’ boyfriend and co-conspirator, Fotis Dulos, took his own life in 2020 after being charged with the murder of his wife, whose body has still not been found.
Prosecutors alleged that Dulos, a luxury home builder originally from Greece, killed his estranged wife during a heated custody dispute over their children, asserting that Troconis played a role in the murder plot due to dissatisfaction with Dulos’ divorce proceedings.
