Software Engineer Sentenced to 10 Years for Building So-Called ‘Ghost Guns’

Dexter Taylor, a Brooklyn resident and software engineer, was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison for charges related to firearms made from a “ghost gun kit.” according to to NBC New York.

In April, Taylor was found guilty on 13 charges, all related to firearms he made or fabricated as a hobbyist gunsmith.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced The charges against Taylor were filed on April 22, 2022.

Mr. Gonzalez said:

The defendant allegedly acquired a large number of homemade ghost guns that were as authentic and dangerous as conventional firearms. Ghost gun owners can bypass all-important background checks and registration requirements by building their guns from kits, unfinished parts, or 3D printed components. Ghost guns also don’t have serial numbers, so they can’t be traced. The proliferation of ghost guns in our neighborhoods is a major cause of the violence plaguing our communities, and my office is working tirelessly to stop the spread of ghost guns in Brooklyn. I’m here.

In other words, the charges centered on what Democrats have dubbed “ghost guns.”

During the trial, prosecutors tried to paint Taylor as a dangerous man who manufactured dangerous firearms in the basement of his home. In this vein, prosecutors opposed Taylor’s family’s support in court and did not allow an upstairs neighbor, who knew of Taylor’s hobbies, to testify on her behalf.

On Friday, a jury found Taylor guilty of 13 weapons charges.

The jury found Taylor guilty of second-degree criminal possession of a loaded weapon, four counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, five counts of criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of five or more firearms, and unlawful possession. Prohibition of pistol ammunition, violation of registration certificate, prohibition of unfinished frames or receivers. His two lesser charges, including third-degree criminal possession of three or more firearms and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, were not voted on.
