Marine Stabbed to Death in Wilmington, NC Brawl
A U.S. Marine was fatally stabbed during a fight early Sunday morning in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. The police have released surveillance images of a person of interest related to this tragic incident.
The victim, 21-year-old Daniel Montano, was one of two individuals injured during the altercation. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after, as confirmed by both the Wilmington Police and his family.
Authorities arrived at the scene around 2 a.m. following reports of multiple confrontations in the 100 block of North Front Street, a location popular among Marines and situated roughly 110 miles from Camp Lejeune.
Online videos captured police deploying pepper spray before discovering Montano, who was hunched over and bleeding extensively on the sidewalk.
In the footage, a bystander can be seen attempting to assist Montano, who eventually collapsed while rescuers rushed to help him.
The second stabbing victim fled initially but was later located by officers, who applied a tourniquet to save his life.
Montano was with the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, according to family members who described him as dedicated to his service and bringer of joy to their lives.
In a touching tribute, his family stated on a GoFundMe page for his funeral expenses that Montano was not only a proud Marine but also a beloved son and brother who illuminated their lives.
The Wilmington Police expressed their condolences, reaching out to Montano’s family and friends during this painful time.
Investigators are actively seeking information about a male suspect observed in the surveillance images. He is described as a medium-built black male wearing a fleece-lined denim jacket, a pink shirt, and white sneakers. He was also seen with a dark blue head wrap and long hair.
Officials are encouraging anyone who might have been in the downtown area between midnight and 3 a.m. to share any relevant info, including photos or videos.
There has been considerable scrutiny over the police’s response to the situation. Wilmington Police Chief Ryan Zuidema defended his officers, stating that the video does not capture the full complexity of the scene.
“In the chaos, they couldn’t identify who was who,” he explained during a press briefing. He acknowledged the ongoing challenges officers faced in determining the suspect’s whereabouts and any potential additional victims.
Zuidema emphasized that responding officers had to make quick assessments while managing a high-stress situation. He also mentioned that one officer was affected by the pepper spray, and protocol required another officer to put on gloves before aiding the victim.
The origin of the brawl remains unclear, leaving many questions unanswered. Meanwhile, police have reported another nearby stabbing around the same time, which has led to the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect charged with serious assault.
