Soldier from Fort Bliss accused of espionage for trying to provide Russia with classified U.S. military information

Soldier from Fort Bliss taken into custody for espionage after trying to provide Russia with secret U.S. military information

Soldier Arrested for Espionage Attempt

A 22-year-old active-duty soldier from Fort Bliss was taken into custody on Wednesday. The charges? Attempting to pass national defense information to a foreign enemy and unlawfully exporting controlled technical data.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office issued a press release detailing the charges against Taylor Adam Lee, who supposedly used his top-secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information clearance to send sensitive info to Russia’s Ministry of Defense.

“From about May 2025 until now, Lee aimed to leverage his U.S. Army credentials to relay U.S. defense information to Russia’s Ministry of Defense. In June 2025, he reportedly sent export-controlled technical details regarding the M1A2 Abrams Tank online and expressed a willingness to assist the Russian Federation,” the statement read.

Allegedly, Lee sent a message to Russian officials saying, “The USA is not happy with me for trying to expose their weaknesses,” and added, “At this point, I’d even volunteer to assist the Russian federation when I’m there in any way.”

In July, Lee met with someone he believed was a Russian government representative.

During their meeting, he handed over an SD card and gave a detailed description of the documents it contained, including info on the M1A2 Abrams tank and another armored vehicle used by the U.S. military.

Furthermore, he provided several documents that contained controlled technical data, which he wasn’t authorized to share.

“During and after the July meeting, Lee talked about obtaining and supplying a particular piece of hardware from the M1A2 Abrams tank to the Russian government. On July 31, 2025, he appeared to deliver this hardware to a storage unit in El Paso. Following this, he messaged the person he thought was a Russian government representative, stating, ‘Mission accomplished,’” the release stated.

Lee was arrested on Wednesday and subsequently appeared in federal court that same day.

Brigadier General Sean F. Stinchon, commanding general of Army Counterintelligence Command, commented, “This arrest is an alarming reminder of the serious threat facing our U.S. Army. Thanks to the diligent work of Army Counterintelligence Command Special Agents and our FBI partners, Soldiers who betray their oath will be caught and held accountable.”

U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas also emphasized the significance of national security, stating, “We remain vigilant against those who would aid our adversaries and jeopardize the United States.” He expressed appreciation for the investigative collaboration with the FBI and Army Counterintelligence Command as the case moves forward.
