Some Republicans seem to be framing the potential win of Zoran Mamdani as a way to label Democrats as far-left extremists, but it looks like Donald Trump is part of this conversation.
From discussions surrounding Trump and the New York mayoral race, it’s clear that he, a lifelong New Yorker—except for his time in D.C.—doesn’t want his city to suffer under socialist policies, even if that aligns with GOP interests.
This concern is likely tied to his real estate holdings. His name still graces numerous buildings around the city, including Trump Tower and Trump International Hotel. While he doesn’t fully own all these properties, their combined worth still runs into billions.
Trump’s passion for New York stands out. He even held a rally at Madison Square Garden shortly before the election, indicating he values the city’s success. His ties to local workers and businesses are still evident through employees associated with the Trump Organization.
A source familiar with Trump stated, “He’s very focused on keeping the socialists out. He has no desire to lose New York City.” It’s interesting how personal interests weave into political motivations.
Recently, Mamdani has been making anti-Trump appeals in his campaign, aiming to turn the election into a referendum on Trump’s presidency.
In a recent speech, he remarked, “There’s no borough that can shield you from Trump’s cruelty.” New York doesn’t lean conservative, but some believe Trump’s influence could negatively impact Mamdani’s prospects.
One insider noted, “He’s got more support now in New York City than ever. Even those who typically wouldn’t vote for him appreciate his stance on issues like anti-Semitism.” It’s a complicated relationship, for sure.
While Trump might not fully endorse a candidate, it’s likely he’ll weigh in on the race using his platform. There’s potential for him to encourage certain candidates to step aside in favor of others, perhaps backing Republicans like Curtis Sliwa or even current Mayor Eric Adams if it aligns with his interests.
On the right, some are contemplating Mamdani’s potential victory as not entirely unfavorable. One Republican, speaking anonymously, remarked, “It might actually pave the way for Elise Stefanik’s governorship and overall success for Republicans in the midterms.”
