‘Something’s Gonna Happen in 2024…Don’t Know What’

Democratic pollsters have warned they could face problems because polls have been less reliable than usual in recent elections because of the difficulty of gauging former President Donald Trump’s appeal in surveys.

President Joe Biden defeated President Trump in 2020 “narrower than many polls suggest,” providing an “oops, I got it” moment for Democratic pollsters, the polling firm said. Politico Report.

Moreover, while polls had predicted Democrats would expand their House majority, it was actually predicted that it would shrink, the report added.

These revelations reportedly prompted five major Democratic pollsters, normally rivals, to work together to revise their polls, which were less reliable than usual.

Vice President Kamala Harris appears to have caught up with Trump in the polls, but Democratic pollsters are still questioning how real her gains are and warning that even if the polls are accurate, Trump still has a significant lead. Politico Reported.

“It remains a very tight race and that’s consistent with everything we know,” Margie Omero, a partner at GBAO Strategies, a Democratic polling firm, told the outlet.

For example, a recent Navigator Research poll found that Trump and Harris were “basically tied” in battleground states, with Trump having the advantage on certain candidate characteristics that voters generally prefer, such as whether the candidate is fit for the job and a strong leader.

Another clear warning sign for Democrats is the possibility of polling errors, given the reality that Trump’s appeal is so hard to gauge in public opinion polls: Surveys in 2016 and 2020 underestimated the 45th president’s approval rating. Politico Reported.

“I’ve spent a great deal of time and analysis trying to study these issues thoroughly, and I feel like I understand them much better than I did before,” said Nick Gourevitch, a partner at Global Strategy Group. “I don’t think there’s any pollster in the U.S. who can say they’re 100 percent sure that all of the polling problems have been solved. I think that’s ridiculous.”

Notably, Democratic pollsters conducted a months-long experiment in Wisconsin, not to predict the election outcome but to reach out to voters in a number of unusual ways to see whether they differed from voters captured by traditional polling methods.

As a result, pollsters have found that traditional polls can capture more politically engaged voters, which isn’t a problem for polls conducted in elections with typically low turnout, but could pose a problem for the reliability of polls conducted in presidential elections, where a less politically engaged electorate votes.

As a result of these potential problems, “most elected Democrats and professional Democrats” are “trying to curb their enthusiasm” at the Democratic National Convention (DNC). Politico Reported.

Democratic polling organizations have tried to address issues with the reliability of their surveys since 2020 but have warned that polls may still be underestimating Trump in the 2024 election, without pinpointing exactly why.

“Every year there’s been something unexpected,” said John Anzalone, chief pollster for Biden’s 2020 campaign. “This is a tough industry. Something will happen in 2024. Right now, neither you nor I know what it is.”
