Son of Hollywood producer facing triple murder charges takes his own life in jail

Sam Haskell IV, the son of a well-known Hollywood producer, tragically took his own life in a Los Angeles prison while awaiting trial for serious charges. He had been accused of murdering his wife and her stepfather on November 6, 2023, and had entered a not guilty plea previously. A coroner’s examination concluded that Haskell died from “an incised wound to the upper limb” on July 12.

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman previously stated that new evidence was expected to be presented in a preliminary hearing, focusing on Haskell’s connection to a 27-year-old woman. Hochman shared that a knife, reportedly bearing the DNA of all three victims, was found among Haskell’s belongings.

Haskell’s death means that he will not face a judge. Hochman noted, “Instead of standing in front of the judge and answering the crime he was charged with, the defendant could escape justice.” He described Haskell’s actions as horrific and expressed that the family, already facing great losses, was deprived of the chance to confront him and share their memories.

Haskell’s legal team previously dismissed concerns about their client’s risk of self-harm as “wild speculation.” He was facing three murder charges linked to the deaths of his wife, May Haskell, and her parents, Yangxian Wang, 64, and Goshan Lee, 71.

Reports claim that after Haskell allegedly killed three people, prosecutors paid a $500 work crew to remove large garbage bags from the victims’ residence. It was noted that one worker looked inside a bag, found human remains, and promptly alerted the authorities.
