Sony Open in Hawaii Preview
Another week in paradise begins as PGA Tour players prepare for the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
Defending champion Kim Si-woo hopes to get back on the field and defend his title. He won last year at 18 under, so expect another birdie fest as the players look to earn FedEx Cup points early. In addition, the wet conditions softened the areas, creating even better scoring conditions on an already calm golf course.
When it comes to important storylines this week, there's probably no bigger storyline more noteworthy than the return of Woodland and Zalatoris. They both underwent surgery and were away from the course for several months.
Woodland, a former U.S. Open champion, underwent surgery to remove a brain lesion in September. His last PGA Tour start was at the Wyndham Championship in early August. However, Woodland finished 94th in the rankings, missing out on the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Meanwhile, Zalatoris last practiced at the Hero World Challenge in December. However, the former Wake Forest Demon Deacon has not competed in a sanctioned event since the World Championship vs. Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas, last March.
Other notable players in the field this week include Chris Kirk, who won the Sentry on Maui last week. Kirk loves this song. He placed third at last year's Sony Open in Hawaii.
Saheeth Segala, Jordan Spieth and reigning British champion Brian Harman all finished in the top five at Sentry and will be looking to move up there again this week. These three of his stars will be hoping to maintain that strong record.
Segala challenged Kirk on Sunday, but two big mistakes left him in second place.
This week, many young people will be showing off their next generation of talent. Akshay Bhatia and Ludwig Oberg are leading the way on that front, but they will be joined by Pierceson Coody and Dumont de Chassard. Blaise Akana, a golfer from the University of Hawaii, is one of this week's sponsored athletes. Akana is the youngest in the field at 19 years old.
