Sophie Cunningham’s Injury Update
Sophie Cunningham expressed that she’s feeling “really well” despite confirming her MCL tears in her right knee, which ended her season during an overtime victory against the Sun on Sunday.
While on the “Show Me Something” podcast on Tuesday, the Fever guard recounted the moment she heard her knee pop after a collision with Sun guard Bria Hartley at Mohegan Sun Arena, where Indiana triumphed over Connecticut 99-93.
Cunningham also addressed the rumors circulating on social media, particularly from a friend, that Hartley had intentionally injured her during the game.
She clarified, stating that Hartley did not mean to hurt her and even suggested her mom should delete a related tweet that criticized Hartley.
Sophie mentioned, “I’m actually really good friends with Bria… it was just a basketball play. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time when she fell.” She reassured listeners that Hartley had no bad intentions.
During the game, Cunningham appeared to be in distress after colliding with Hartley. She is set to undergo surgery but shared little detail about it.
“If you’re going to hurt your knee, it’s like the best possible case,” she reflected. “In the past year, I’ve been thinking a lot about our league, dealing with adversity honestly.” She described the moment of injury, saying, “I just felt a pop right away.” Although it’s tough, she expressed gratitude for her situation.
The Fever recently signed a veteran guard while parting ways with another player in light of Cunningham’s injury. Over the course of 30 games, she averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists, proving to be a significant asset, especially with All-Star Kate Linklark sidelined due to her injury.
Cunningham and the Fever, with a current record of 19-16, are bracing for their match against the Lynx at home on Friday, before heading to Minnesota for another game on Sunday.
