WNBA Players Voice Concerns Over League Leadership
Another player is stepping up to call out the WNBA and its Commissioner, Kathy Engelbert, this time it’s Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever.
On Thursday, Cunningham expressed her frustrations during an interview, following similar comments from Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier. Collier’s remarks have stirred up considerable backlash against the league.
“I’m just really tired of the league,” Cunningham stated. She emphasized the need for accountability from leadership at all levels, suggesting that while some individuals in prominent positions could excel in business, they seemed out of touch with basketball itself.
Though Cunningham didn’t explicitly name Engelbert, her criticisms appear aimed in that direction. Her teammate, Caitlyn Clark, also lent her support to Collier’s views, stressing that this is a crucial moment for the league, which has been around for over 25 years. “This is the moment we have to take advantage of,” Clark added.
The stir caused by Collier’s comments comes as the WNBA finds itself in the spotlight during the playoffs. Her statements have raised questions about the current state of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations, which are set to conclude this month.
Collier pointed out a recurring theme in the league regarding the issues of player compensation, highlighting “sustainability” as a buzzword that does little to address why players can’t earn what they deserve. “What’s really unsustainable,” she argued, “is to maintain a good product on the floor while allowing officials to lose control of the game.”
She also noted, “Fans watch it every night. Coaches get scrutinized in the media after every game, win or lose, but leadership only seems to be fined and remains unaccountable.”
In response to the criticism, Engelbert expressed disappointment in Collier’s comments earlier this week.
