Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham Critiques WNBA Refereeing

Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham recently made headlines after speaking out against the WNBA and its officiating. On Tuesday, she urged the league not to “protect” her teammate Caitlin Clark amid what she described as overly aggressive defense.

Cunningham gained a lot of attention last week for a hard foul on Connecticut Sun’s Jacee Sheldon. A brawl ensued shortly after, leading to Cunningham, Sheldon, and Lindsay Allen being ejected with only 40 seconds left in the game. The Fever ultimately lost that match.

“You know, it’s just part of how things go. I think the refs really need to step up. They’ve accumulated a history of not protecting our star players,” Cunningham expressed. “I’m all about backing my teammates. That’s just what I do.”

Clark, a rising star in the league, has faced significant physicality from opposing players since joining the WNBA last year. Her rookie season included numerous controversial moments where she felt the referees failed to impose proper fouls, much to the frustration of fans.

In one recent game against New York Liberty, Clark was apparently fouled in a key moment, but the referee didn’t call it. This left her visibly confused and frustrated, a sentiment that both she and Cunningham shared following the match.

In another incident during the game, Natasha Cloud of the Liberty collided with Clark, which was not called a foul, raising further concerns about the way the officials are handling player safety.

It seems Cunningham is taking on a protective role for Clark, which has led her to become a sort of enforcer on the court. Former NBA All-Star Joakim Noah even suggested that the Fever should have someone specifically tasked with protecting Clark. He mentioned the necessity of having an “enforcer” on the team to ensure Clark feels safe playing her game.

Who is Sophie Cunningham?

Cunningham has quickly gained popularity, with her social media following skyrocketing after the incident. Before Tuesday’s game, she had close to 400,000 followers on TikTok, but that number ballooned to 1.2 million shortly afterward. Likewise, her Instagram following surged to over 800,000.

A notable aspect of Cunningham’s background is her martial arts training; she holds a black belt in Taekwondo, having earned it at just six years old. Additionally, she grew up in a family that valued athleticism, following in her father Jim’s footsteps, who played soccer at the University of Missouri.

Retrospectively, she reflects on her upbringing on a farm and the work ethic it instilled in her. “A lot of our success comes from what we learned growing up on the farm. We worked hard, and that teamwork made us stronger,” she shared.
