Sophie Cunningham Addresses Controversy Over WNBA Expansion Remarks

Sophie Cunningham has found herself at the center of a debate regarding her comments about the WNBA’s recent expansion into Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia. On Thursday, she attempted to clarify her statements prior to a game against one of her rivals, the Fever’s ace.

Fans in Indiana have previously expressed doubts about whether players would prefer cities like Cleveland and Detroit over more popular destinations like Miami, Nashville, and Kansas City.

Her remarks did not sit well with many in the WNBA community, particularly in Detroit and Cleveland. However, Cunningham noted that players often enjoy off-court lifestyles in more tourist-friendly locales. She spoke on this before an interview with Fever reporter Tony East.

“Firstly, I definitely recognize the WNBA’s history. Both cities had teams before, and I’m thankful for the support they provided,” she said, elaborating on her point of view. “The off-court experience is really intriguing to me—places like Miami, for example. That’s just what I’ve encountered, and I appreciate the impact it had on the sport’s history.”

She noted that social media is buzzing with reactions from both cities regarding her comments. It’s clear that Cleveland, in particular, is eager to showcase the excitement surrounding her teammate Kate Linklark’s video from the 2024 Women’s College Basketball Final Four.

Detroit has also responded passionately, asserting, “Detroit is a sporting town, and the excitement for the WNBA’s return is entirely justified.”

Cunningham believed her remarks were misinterpreted, expressing her frustration. “I think people are completely misunderstanding the situation,” she explained. “I didn’t mean to offend anyone, especially not the working-class folks. I come from Missouri and now live in Indiana. I was just hinting that Broadway offers a different kind of fun.”

Interestingly, the WNBA recently announced that it would be expanding to Detroit, Cleveland, and Philadelphia—cities with a rich history of supporting NBA franchises.

Detroit once had a WNBA franchise that achieved significant success, winning championships in 2003, 2006, and 2008.
