Stephen A. Smith Backs Sophie Cunningham’s Stance on Women’s Sports
Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith came to the defense of WNBA player Sophie Cunningham after she remarked that men shouldn’t compete in women’s sports. He believes her opinion reflects that of many who may not voice their thoughts.
During a recent segment on his SiriusXM show, Smith mentioned that Cunningham represents the “silent majority” who share her view. He posed a thought-provoking question: “What happens if an NBA player decides to switch over to the WNBA? How do we assess their skill level?” He feels it’s crucial to evaluate such situations thoughtfully.
Smith expressed his support for the LGBTQ+ community but emphasized the need to consider the rights of all athletes, stating, “You can’t prioritize trans athletes at the cost of biological women. What about their rights?” He argued that there should be spaces for everyone—men’s sports, women’s sports, and leagues for trans athletes too.
He expressed that there’s a growing fear in society about addressing these topics openly. “We need to change that. Truth shouldn’t be hidden,” he insisted, underscoring the unfairness of men competing in women’s sports. He firmly agreed with Cunningham’s stance.
Cunningham reiterated her support for excluding biological males from women’s sports during an interview with ESPN this week. She faced significant backlash, particularly from left-leaning circles online. “People claim I hate trans individuals, but that’s not true,” she stated, asserting that her intentions are rooted in love and protection.
“I want to safeguard young girls in sports, ensuring they don’t face competition from biological males,” she added. As the reactions intensified, she remained firm in her beliefs during a press conference on Wednesday.
“I stand by what I said. To me, it’s just common sense,” Cunningham remarked, emphasizing the importance of protecting children. “I don’t harbor hate for anyone. I’m all about love, especially for biological women.”
