Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham Calls for Leadership Change in WNBA

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has suggested that the WNBA may benefit from new leadership as it faces unprecedented challenges.

Cunningham, discussing her unexpected rise to prominence and the league’s future direction, hinted that the leadership position could become “open” at the end of the year. She emphasized the need for bold and confident leadership that prioritizes players’ interests over personal gain.

“You need someone in power who is bold, confident and always wants the best for the players, not just for themselves,” Cunningham noted. “So, overall, I feel like maybe at the end of the year that position might be open, but that’s not my call,” she added, raising some eyebrows about the future leadership of the league.

Despite her comments, Cunningham acknowledged that WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has made significant contributions to the league. Nevertheless, she feels a different approach may be necessary given the league’s evolving circumstances. “To be in her shoes, for us as players, it’s a difficult position. We always want more because we know how great it can be, but… at the end of the day, it’s up to Adam Silver,” she explained.

As noted by Sporting News, the WNBA is governed by the NBA, which plays a crucial role in selecting the league’s leadership. “The NBA Board of Governors and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver are responsible for recruiting and hiring WNBA commissioners,” it stated.

Before taking her role as WNBA Commissioner, Engelbert made history as the first female CEO of a Big Four accounting firm at Deloitte.

Recently, Cunningham has also been in the spotlight for her views on inclusion in women’s sports. She expressed support for restricting biological males from competing in women’s events during an interview with ESPN.

“I’ve gotten a lot of negative feedback about how I hate trans people, and I’m like, ‘I never said that,'” she stated. “I think I’m here to spread love, but I also think that love is true and honest. And I want to protect young girls in locker rooms and young girls in sports who don’t have to go against biological men,” she further explained.

Her comments have generated a strong response online, leading her to reaffirm her stance during a press conference. “I said what I said. I think that’s kind of common sense, and I think I’ll continue to believe that. I think it’s really important to protect children,” Cunningham asserted.

She also expressed her commitment to supporting biological women. “I don’t hate anyone,” she remarked. “I’m there to love, but I’m also there to love biological women.”
