Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham Faces WNBA Fines Again

Sophie Cunningham, a standout player for the Indiana Fever, is once more in the spotlight after receiving her third fine from the WNBA. This latest penalty follows her comments made during a podcast where she criticized certain aspects of the league.

After suffering an MCL injury in a game against the Connecticut Sun, Cunningham, who will miss the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season, spoke out about a fellow player, Page Booker. On an August 13 episode of her podcast, she expressed support for Booker but appeared frustrated with the situation. “I love Page, don’t get me wrong,” she said, but it seems her comments didn’t sit well with league officials.

The league fined her an undisclosed amount, prompting Cunningham to mention, “I’m officially 3-3 for being fined by the WNBA.” She seemed taken aback by these penalties and questioned the rationale behind them, especially considering her comments were intended to be supportive.

Previously, she received a $500 fine for her initial remarks about officials and a podcast debut episode that encountered backlash. Cunningham felt that the criticism was unwarranted. “I didn’t even say anything bad,” she argued, indicating her surprise at the fines she has accumulated.

Cunningham has been quite candid about her experiences with officiating in the league. She shared thoughts on what it’s like to be a referee and suggested that some calls made during games can be perplexing. “If you’re on another team and you’re on a foul from me, it’s cool from me. But I’ll let you do it…,” she remarked, expressing her frustrations with inconsistency in officiating.

The Fever guard has seen her visibility grow, especially after a heated incident during a game earlier this season, which saw her ejected amidst a brawl. This increasing public profile has likely added to the scrutiny she faces, both on and off the court.

Looking ahead, Cunningham will enter the upcoming offseason as a free agent, having played for a year with the Fever while making $100,000. By the end of the season, she participated in 30 games, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.
