Indiana Fever Star Sophie Cunningham Sings at Local Bar After Victory
Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham surprised fans on Friday night when she took to a local bar in Indianapolis to sing some patriotic tunes following her team’s 98-87 victory over the Dallas Wings.
After the game, she showed up at Clayton’s Country Bar and performed a song by country artist Toby Keith, specifically Red, White and Blue. She made quite an entrance by climbing on top of the bar, as reported.
Her performance quickly gained traction on social media and went viral, much to the delight of her fans.
Cunningham, a prominent figure in the WNBA, has faced criticism from various quarters, particularly from those who disagree with her stance on women’s sports. She sparked controversy in July when she expressed her belief that men identifying as women shouldn’t compete in women’s sports.
“I think I’m here to spread love, but I also think that love is true and honest, and I want to protect the young girls in the locker room and the young girls in sports who don’t have to go against biological men,” she told ESPN, reflecting a complex view on the matter.
During a follow-up on her comments, she stated, “I’m in the middle. I see both sides and I disagree with both sides. Yet, it seems like people like to make assumptions about my political stance.” The 6-foot-1 guard has remained steadfast despite the backlash.
In response to the uproar, she maintained, “I said what I said. I think that’s kind of common sense, and I think I’ll continue to believe that. Protecting children is really important.” She emphasized her non-hateful intentions but also reaffirmed her support for biological women.
On the court, Cunningham has encountered particularly aggressive plays, including a striking foul from Chicago Sky player Dijonai Carrington. Off the court, she has also been the target of fan abuse. The WNBA had to act after Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton verbally attacked several young fans holding supportive signs for Cunningham during a game, resulting in a five-game suspension for Keaton.
