Sophie Cunningham's cowboy hat message sparks discussion among fans, Holly Rowe's WNBA Finals strategy, and is Texas' field really gray?

We’re in the last week of October, and it’s an exciting time, isn’t it? Halloween is just five days away, and tonight we get the “Sports Equinox” with all four major sports happening simultaneously—five if you want to include the WNBA. It’s a pretty fun moment for sports fans.

October really is the best month, and this week feels like the last calm before the holiday rush. I suggest you take a moment to enjoy it because everything will change in just seven days. Yup, an election is coming up next Tuesday, which is quite frankly going to be a bit of a downer.

But, more importantly to me, this is the last week before the entire holiday season kicks in. Come midnight Saturday, it’s all going to shift to Christmas. We’ll see the ads, hear the music, and the stores will be decked out. You’ll go to bed thinking about Halloween and wake up to the sounds of, well, you know who—Mariah Carey making her annual appearance!

And there’s nothing we can do about it. Seriously. So let’s soak up this week while we can!

Here we go with a Monday Nightcaps—where, by the way, Sophie Cunningham’s cowboy hat at the recent F1 race got quite a few reactions across the country. Never fails to impress!

What else do we have? ESPN’s Holly Rowe came up with a fantastic idea for the WNBA Finals, plus there’s this intriguing question about the color of Texas’ field during night games. Also, was Dan Campbell’s decision to go for it on fourth down as insane as people think? I don’t think so; his explanation post-game might even change your mind a bit.

Grab yourself a pumpkin for National Pumpkin Day, and let’s dive into this Monday ‘Cap!

Sophie made quite an impression at F1 this weekend

We still haven’t picked up pumpkins yet, but we’ll get around to that soon. You can’t just leave them sitting on the porch in Florida; they’ll be spoiled before you know it.

About the holiday season … I really do love it, especially Christmas, though I think Christmas Eve is the superior day. It just seems to start way too soon after Halloween.

As soon as November 1 hits, the radio stations launch into Christmas tunes, and it feels like every commercial suddenly features Santa. We’re jumping from Pumpkin Spice to Peppermint Mocha overnight, and I think we need a little breathing room. Perhaps a two-week buffer, maybe? After waiting all year for fall, we don’t need to shove it aside immediately.

And Thanksgiving? Don’t even get me started on how little respect it gets. That’s been a long-standing frustration for me.

Anyway, I’m all for enjoying the holidays, but it just feels off to kick things off right after Halloween.

Let’s switch gears and get back to the WNBA. Holly Rowe had an interesting suggestion for where Game 6 should take place later this week.

Dan’s gamble and a curious Texas question

Holly tweeted about holding Game 6 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Now, I nearly choked on my coffee reading that. For a moment, I thought it was a joke!

But it wasn’t.

So, quick question: who really thinks a WNBA game could fill up a stadium that seats 72,000? Anyone? Bueller? I mean, let’s be real—if anyone believes that, they might also be waiting for those $5,000 checks from Trump.

It’s just not happening. I honestly don’t think even the Atlanta Hawks could sell that place out, let alone the Dream. They couldn’t fill Truist Park for the Braves’ playoff games recently, and now we’re expected to believe a WNBA game could? Sounds wild, and it’s so out there that I almost have to admire the thought.

Now, diving into the Lions fans who faced some serious tension yesterday. Dan Campbell’s choice drew a lot of criticism, and honestly, I was baffled too at first. But I think I’m on his side now.

He had a strategy: if they punted, Green Bay could have easily taken the win without giving Detroit another chance. So, by going for it, they had either a chance to continue the drive or give Green Bay such a short field that they’d likely still get the ball back with a chance to score. It makes sense, right?

Campbell was thinking several steps ahead—like chess, not checkers!

Lastly, I’ve been pondering for years about why the turf at Texas’ home field appears so gray during night games on TV. It’s perplexing! I recently watched the second half of a game using an alternate broadcast because a reader suggested it, and I didn’t hate it. It looked more like a normal green field than I’d expected.

So, is it the camera’s fault? Or is there something about the field itself? I have to know—are there any Longhorn fans out there who can shed some light?

In any case, let’s make the most of this final week of October!
