Jason Whitlock Praises Indiana Fever’s Offseason Moves
Jason Whitlock expressed enthusiasm regarding the Indiana Fever’s recent acquisitions. The team, already highlighted by the presence of standout player Caitlyn Clark, has also brought in experienced players Natasha Howard and Dewanna Bonner, as well as WNBA Draft pick McCailla Thimpson.
Among these signings, Whitlock is particularly impressed by Sophie Cunningham, who was traded from the Phoenix Mercury. He remarked, “When they signed Sophie Cunningham, I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s a championship move.'” Even though Cunningham’s time with the Fever was marred by injury, her skills as a defender and clutch shooter have been noted as valuable, complementing Clark’s playmaking abilities.
However, during a game against the Connecticut Sun on June 17, Cunningham was ejected for committing a Flagrant-2 foul on Jacee Sheldon, which involved pulling her down during a fast break. While some critics labeled this foul as reckless and lacking discipline, there were fans who enjoyed the intensity of the moment. Whitlock falls into the latter camp, believing it was an act of loyalty to Clark.
“She’s exactly what the Indiana Fever needs,” he asserted. “She brings the toughness and energy that this team requires.” Cunningham’s arrival is seen as a critical addition to the Fever’s lineup.
Cunningham’s foul occurred with just 46 seconds left in the game and seemed unnecessary to some observers, but Whitlock defended it, suggesting it sent a message across the league: “She snatched Jacee Sheldon by her hair, making it clear that the Fever aren’t here to back down.” He described Cunningham as “bold and fearless,” indicating that she fulfills a crucial role for the team.
Despite opinions on whether the foul was warranted, Whitlock sees it as a “championship moment.” He believes it’s a rallying point that could enhance the Fever’s confidence moving forward, though he acknowledges it might also put a target on their backs.
He speculated that players like Dehonai Carrington from the Dallas Wings and Angel Reese from the Chicago Sky might come looking for revenge when they face the Fever next. Cunningham’s actions have set the tone to not only elevate the offensive play for the rest of the season but also put the team to the test.
