Verizon suffered a nationwide outage Monday morning that put millions of customers across the U.S. into SOS mode, leaving them unable to make or receive calls or text messages throughout the morning and afternoon, leaving affected customers with no end in sight. The outlook is uncertain.
For Verizon customers, the outage appears to have started around 9:30 a.m. ET. flood DownDetector, a site that monitors technical issues, reported that cell phone service was down in SOS mode. On the other hand, some sites reported having a bar but not being able to make calls or send or receive texts.
By 10:15 a.m. ET, more than 100,000 customers reported an outage with Verizon's DownDetector. This suggests that this outage is impacting even more customers across the country.
Verizon has 114.2 million users in the U.S., but the number of people affected by the outage remains unclear. The problem appears to be widespread nationwide, with customers reporting problems everywhere from New York to California.
“In Miami. Still having an SOS since 11am ET,” one customer reported.
“No voice, no text, no data in mid-Michigan since this morning,” another person revealed.
“I'm in Dallas,” another person revealed. “It started around 8:45 a.m. PT with no incoming calls. Then about an hour later there were no outgoing calls. I am currently unable to receive text messages.”
Similar reports flooded DownDetector from customers across the country.
As the day went on, Verizon customers became increasingly furious with their phone provider, voicing their disappointment on DownDetector all afternoon.
“This is so stupid!! I have a very important call that I can't afford to miss!! Verizon, please help me! Hmm!! It's going to take over 5 hours,” one person wrote. the customer shouted.
“It's been down since 10:01am in Warren, Ohio. My husband is a truck driver and this is unacceptable,” another wrote.
“I need my phone for work! I lost a lot of business today,” another lamented.
At 3:30 p.m. ET, one customer wrote, “6 more hours…this is unreal,” and another commented, “Damn, I didn't think the power would be out for this long.”
“There's no way a company this big should be out of business for this long. I know they have the talent for this problem,” another surmised.
“Should I start looking for a new provider?” asked another customer.
Verizon addressed the issue in an X post Monday morning, saying, “We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers. Our engineers are working diligently to identify and resolve the issue. We are working quickly on this.”
However, it remains unclear when Verizon customers can expect their cell phone service to return to normal.
