South Africa Seeks to Attract Elon Musk with Reduced Tariffs During U.S. Trip

South Africa’s Efforts to Engage Elon Musk

A delegation from South Africa visiting the US is reportedly interested in enticing Elon Musk, a native of the country, to support a trade agreement. They propose lowering tariffs on Teslas in exchange for establishing electric vehicle charging stations.

According to South African news24.com, a spokesperson for President Cyril Ramaphosa mentioned that during his upcoming visit to Washington, he plans to discuss business opportunities with Musk. This meeting coincides with efforts to improve relations with US President Donald Trump.

Ramaphosa and Trump are expected to meet on Wednesday. In preparation, South African officials are developing a trade proposal intended to mend diplomatic ties.

One idea on the table is to grant Tesla, which is closely associated with Trump through Musk, favorable tariffs on imports into South Africa. This, in exchange for the company establishing charging infrastructure in the country.

Musk has expressed frustration over South Africa restricting his satellite internet service, Starlink. He implies that barriers to his investment are based on racial lines.

A representative from the ruling party in South Africa recently stated that if foreign investors have issues with local regulations, they are free to seek opportunities elsewhere.

The South African delegation aims to maintain the country’s involvement in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), an essential trade agreement that is set to expire at the end of September. There are doubts about its renewal, especially given the skeptical attitude of some Republican congress members. If this agreement isn’t salvaged, the South African government is looking for new, separate agreements with the US, hoping to avoid increased tariffs on American imports following Trump’s recent tariff increases.

Interestingly, as reported, the South African government seems to be focusing on addressing misconceptions President Trump has about the country rather than offering significant concessions on the issues he has raised.
