South Africa Sends Away Top Israeli Diplomat

South Africa Declares Israeli Diplomat Persona Non Grata

On Friday, Ariel Seidman, the Chief of Mission at the Israeli embassy in South Africa, was declared persona non grata and given 72 hours to leave the country.

South African authorities accused Seidman of breaching diplomatic protocol, stating that such violations posed risks to the nation’s security. Seidman criticized what he called an “unacceptable breach of diplomatic protocol.”

The South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) pointed out that Seidman’s misconduct included using official Israeli social media to insult President Cyril Ramaphosa and not informing DIRCO about a planned visit from a senior Israeli official.

They noted that these actions constituted a serious misuse of diplomatic immunity and fundamentally violated the Vienna Convention, thereby undermining trust between the two nations. DIRCO went on to urge the Israeli government to ensure its diplomats respect South Africa’s principles in future interactions.

While DIRCO didn’t specify the nature of Seidman’s offensive social media comments, reports suggest a post from the Israeli embassy referred to Ramaphosa’s remarks as “a rare moment of wisdom and diplomatic clarity.”

The claims regarding the lack of notification about the visit by the Israeli official seem plausible. This official was King Vuelekaya Dalindyebo of the Abasembu tribe, who has connections with the Israeli government, contrasting with Ramaphosa’s administration, which has criticized Israel for its actions against Palestinians during the Gaza conflict.

Israel had recalled its ambassador to South Africa in 2023 after allegations of genocide were presented to the International Court of Justice. Following that, Seidman became Israel’s top diplomat in the country. There were discussions within the South African parliament about closing the Israeli diplomatic mission entirely, though that motion never materialized.

During Dalindyebo’s visit to Israel in December, various Israeli officials interacted with him, and a subsequent delegation visited him in South Africa to talk about assistance in sectors like water and health.

Dalindyebo’s camp expressed anger at Seidman’s expulsion, viewing it as an attack on their royal lineage. They accused Ramaphosa’s government of driving Israelis away and harming the local population.

His daughter, Ntando Dalindyebo, emphasized the value of their relationship with the Israeli embassy, arguing that it brings benefits that the South African government fails to deliver. She questioned the rationale behind Seidman’s dismissal, especially considering Israel’s contributions to their community.

Karen Milner, chair of the South African Jewish Parliamentary Committee, criticized the decision as excessive, claiming it was based on a few tweets.

In response, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it described as South Africa’s unfounded accusations and unilateral actions against their diplomat.

Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, also declared South Africa’s diplomatic representative, Sean Edward Beinefeld, persona non grata and requested he vacate Israel within 72 hours, hinting that further measures could follow.

Beinefeld serves as South Africa’s ambassador to the Palestinian Authority, which may complicate Israel’s ability to enforce the expulsion. Should he refuse to depart, there’s a chance Israel could restrict his access to the West Bank.

Some observers believe that Seidman’s removal could provoke a strong reaction from the US, especially given President Donald Trump’s tough stance on diplomatic relations with South Africa. There was speculation that this incident could be seen as a move to embarrass Trump amid previous criticisms directed at South Africa related to its military collaboration with Iran and China.
