Mark Wood picked up yet another injury on Wednesday, so England bring in Saqib Mahmood, whose swing should add some much-needed variety. That’s the only change: Brendon McCullum is not a coach who believes in giving everybody a go.

There’s illness in the South African camp and Temba Bavuma is one of those who are stricken. Aiden Markram takes over, possibly not on the strength of his oratory. At the toss, he’s a little terse, but polite. “Happy to chase,” he mutters, “against a strong England team.”

Well, this is exciting. South Africa have all but qualified already, and England, after yesterday’s damp squib involving Australia and Afghanistan, can’t even climb off the bottom of the group. If the coaches had a full set of reserves, they might be tempted to make 11 changes.

Still, there’s always pride. And personal achievement. And the arc of a career. There are wickets to be taken, hundreds to be scored, nudges to be given. Important Events
Wicket! Duckett C&B Janssen 24 (England 37-3)
Duckett's strength becomes weak as the clip from its leg changes to the leading edge and the ball returns to the bowler. Hello, darkness, my old friend.
6th: England 37-2 (Duckett 24, Route 3) Ngidi finds his line and only accepts two singles.
“Why is Jamie Smith at 3?” he skips Patrick Kennedy. “Root claims 4 as a senior pro, but Brooke is 5 years old and Butler leads from 6 (?) from 6. It's no wonder England is garbage. Ah, salt needs to resolve the difference between 50 and 20 overs.” A fair comment about Smith and salt, but don't call any of these players Wimp.
The route is one of England's greatest ever greatest men in Test cricket, and this one is also pretty good. Brooke has him that he is even better than the route, and Butler is England's greatest whiteball batter of all time. They all face deadly fast bowling and are constantly facing terrible high pressure. They are the opposite of Umipus.
5th: England 35-2 (Duckett 23, Route 2) Duckett picks up his first four from Jansen. Janssen, like ngidi, is lost in the stumps of his leg. And in another action replay, Janssen does it again, and Duckett helps two more selves. This game is very easy when you are in shape and very troublesome when you are not.
4th: England 28-2 (Duckett 17, Route 1) Duckett, still quite untidy, looked over at the ngidi at four more – but he's almost gone! He plays a lovely square force, turns a third run, and a few yards away if South Africa had someone on the stump to collect some great throws from Stubbs (Marcolumn is rather too late). So Duckett survived and he is now the main goal scorer for this Champions Trophy, 220 years old just before Ibrahim Zadran (217).
3rd time: England 20-2 (Duckett 10, Route 0) Thus, the two English informants come together again. And their two finest flops continue to fly: salted with 30 runs in the tournament, Smith 24. McCullum put Smith in number 3 and gambled, giving him an unfamiliar position in an unfamiliar format.
Wicket! Smith C Mark Rum B Janssen 0 (England 20-2)
Same again! Short balls, false pulls, top edges, simple catches. Jamie Smith's first ICC tournament ends with a whisper, not a bang.
Second time: England 18-1 (Duckett 9, Smith 0) England has two players who keep their heads high throughout this troubled tour. It's Bendaket and Joe Root. Faced with Lungi Ngidi, Duckett plays two gentle clips, as if he hadn't realized he had lost his opening partner.
First time: England 9-1 (Duckett 0, Smith 0) The angle of Marco Jansen's left arm was a foreign language for poor salt. Poor salt couldn't even face it with the net as the UK left all the left-handers home. He managed the spank on the four-man cover, but played twice and missed, making a catch in the ring with a leg-to-leg excavator, earning that top edge. One of the worst runball innings you've ever seen.
Wicket! SALT C VAN DER DUSSEN B JANSEN 8 (England 9-1)
oh dear. The disastrous tournament of Phil Salt was completed as Top Edge soared into the air and hit the midwicket's hand. And perhaps his ODI career.
The player is there And the pitch is a biscuit, although there are some cracks. Fix to Team Sheet: The South African Keeper is Klaasen, not Rickelton.
And this is our man on the ground. “Tim, greetings from Karachi. The public address system hype has announced that there are almost no two teams,” Ali Martin says. “Now I've passed the media centre Shahid Afridi. He looks very dapper in a pink suit and an astronaut. That's his birthday today, and apparently he's 48 years old. In other news, Australia and (probably) South Africa are flying from Pakistan to Dubai today, one of whom is doing Abe Simpson and heading straight to Lahore, depending on the outcome of India vs. New Zealand tomorrow. What a farce.”
The boss of the ICC is the Pander to India, that's tough. Volodymyr Zelenskyy is not.
Team: South Africa
The Babuma location went to Tristan Stabbs, and Heinrich Krasen returned to give the central order an air of friendly threat.
1 Ryan Rickelton (WKT), 2 Tristan Stubbs, 3 Lassi van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram (captain), 5 Heinrich Krasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Wyan Mulder, 8 Marco Jansen, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Lungi Ngidi.
Team: England
Mark Wood received yet another injury on Wednesday, so England brings Sakib Mahmoud and his swing should add much needed variety. That's the only change. Brendon McCallum is not a coach who believes in trying out everyone.
England 1 Salt, 2 Duckett, 3 Smith (WKT), 4 Route, 5 Brook, 6 Butler (Captain), 7 Livingston, 8 J Overton, 9 Archer, 10 Rashid, 11 Mahmood.
The other captain is… Aiden Marclam
There was a disease in a South African camp, and Temba Bavuma is one of the people who were attacked. Aiden Marclam may not be his eloquence. In the toss, he is a bit concise but polite. “Please chase after me,” he muttered, “against the strong England team.”
Toss: Joss' victory!
Jos Buttler calls the head, the head. He decided to hit first. “It's an honor to do that in the end,” he says. “A little sadness – it's a very honor and not pan out like I liked it. But some good moments along the way…” he can say it again: he won the T20 World Cup. And even in the bad times he has guided us with dignity and decency.
preamble
Well, this is exciting. South Africa already has all the qualifications, and the UK cannot even climb from the bottom of the group after yesterday's wet squib involving Australia and Afghanistan. If the coach had a full set of reserves, they might be tempted to make 11 changes.
Still, there is always pride. And personal achievements. And the career arc. Wickets to be taken, hundreds of scores, nudges are given. On one side there is a semi-final location. The other is a marker that lies down for reconstruction. Jos Butler has his final outing as England's Whiteball captain. He may have had a passionate time recently, but he was enough to lift the World Cup.
The rubber may be dead, but this is the contest between the second-fastest and third-fastest scorer in the 2025 Champions Trophy so far. And not the second South African.
Play starts at GMT at 9am. Meet about 8.35 on Toss and The Teams news.
