South Carolina Attorney General Indicates Possible Death Penalty for Alex Murdaugh

South Carolina May Seek Death Penalty for Alex Murdaugh

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson hinted on Friday that the state might consider pursuing the death penalty as Alex Murdaugh prepares for his retrial. This development comes after a ruling by the South Carolina Supreme Court, which found Murdaugh guilty of murdering his wife and son.

Wilson mentioned that his office would explore “all options” for addressing Murdaugh’s case following the recent court decision. The announcement of the retrial has heightened public interest, leading to a wave of documentaries and books that depict the case as a representation of local corruption.

“Given the Supreme Court’s decision, we are back to square one on this case, meaning all legal options are on the table, including the death penalty,” Wilson stated.

The verdict was influenced by comments from County Clerk Becky Hill during Murdaugh’s initial trial, where she advised jurors to “Watch your body language,” which the court deemed improper.

Murdaugh is currently incarcerated for separate financial crimes related to fraud at his law firm. He has consistently denied the allegations of killing his wife and son.

Wilson clarified, “To be clear, this decision does not mean Mr. Murdaugh will be released. He will remain in prison for his financial crimes. No one is above the law, and we will continue to fight for justice.”
