A South Carolina couple was found dead in their Spartanburg home over the weekend, and when authorities found them, the temperature inside was 120 degrees, according to local reports and police.

The couple were identified as 84-year-old Joan Littlejohn and 82-year-old Glenwood Fowler, the state reported, citing the coroner's office.

Family members told investigators they went to the home last Wednesday to check on the heater after the couple complained that it was too cold.

Spartanburg police conducted a welfare check on the home after family members said they had not heard from the couple in three days.

Paramedics entered the home through a bedroom window and found the couple dead. Police said their body temperatures exceeded the maximum reading on the thermometer, 106 degrees Fahrenheit.

Spartanburg Fire Marshal Brad Hall told McClatchy News that the temperature in the home was measured at 120 degrees.

Firefighters entered the basement where the heater was kept to find out why the house was so hot. Fire officials used thermal imaging cameras to determine that the temperature of the heater was approximately 1,000 degrees.

Fire personnel disconnected the heater and emergency personnel contacted the county medical examiner's office.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger ruled out foul play in his Jan. 8 report, but said authorities were “concerned as to why the temperatures were so high.”

“We carried out forensic tests this morning which will require further testing,” he said. “As mentioned in the police report, CO2 is an experiment. We will continue to investigate,” he said.
