South Carolina parents permitted their infant twins to be harmed by large rats.

A couple in South Carolina is facing legal issues after their infant twins were injured by a large rat. Reports indicate that deputies from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office discovered a six-month-old baby girl in her bassinet, while a “big rat” was reportedly feeding on her.

The baby girl’s twin brother was also found with significant bite marks on his legs, as mentioned by local authorities. Akayla and Justin Bearden, both 24, acknowledged that they had been dealing with a rat infestation in their home for several months. They eventually called the police last Friday.

The girl was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where she remained for a number of days receiving treatment.

Authorities have stated that both infants, including a third child, are now in the care of the Department of Human Services.

Each parent faces two counts of misconduct involving their children and is currently barred from having contact with them unless otherwise directed by authorities. They appeared in court on Tuesday, where they were granted bonds and are scheduled to return on July 31.

In a related incident, a father in Indiana received a lengthy prison sentence last October after his young son suffered severe injuries from rat bites.
