South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers rejected an $8 million transfer deal.

This is not your dad’s college football.

La Norris Sellers, the quarterback for South Carolina, had an enticing $8 million offer to transfer to another school but chose to stay, according to his father. He noted that while there were many attractive financial propositions, the family’s decision was ultimately about commitment to education and athletics.

“I can tell him to stay or go,” his father shared. “In my opinion, it’s about going to college on a scholarship, playing football, earning a degree, and focusing on what’s ahead. This deal appeared later in the process.”

La Norris echoed these sentiments, asserting that he values the community he’s built. “I’ve been playing soccer for free my whole life,” he said. “My family and siblings are here. There’s simply no reason to look elsewhere.”

Sellers had a remarkable 2024 season, contributing significantly to making the Gamecocks a serious contender. In his second year, he threw for 2,534 yards and achieved 18 touchdowns, leading South Carolina to a 9-4 record.

It’s a breath of fresh air to see college athletes prioritize family ties over financial incentives. However, it’s important to note that La Norris’s decision is more of an exception than the norm.

As reported by the New York Post, Texas QB Quinn Ewers turned down a $6 million offer to transfer. Yet, their situations differ; Ewers has the option to enter the NFL draft and, had he opted not to do so, may have taken the cash.

Former Georgia QB Carson Beck received $4 million to transfer to Miami following a successful run with the Bulldogs.

The $8 million offer extended to Sellers highlights the growing financial influx in college football, which shows no signs of slowing down. Nevertheless, at least one quarterback seems to be prioritizing more than just money.

“He’s made of the right stuff,” said South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer. “He has a solid family support system and understands his role in this situation. Lanorris has a chance to solidify his legacy here.”
