Senator Lindsey Graham Passes Away at 71
U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, representing South Carolina, died on Saturday at the age of 71, as confirmed by his office.
In a statement from Graham’s office, it was revealed, “On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham passed away after a brief and sudden illness. His family appreciates your prayers at this time and requests privacy during this incredibly difficult moment.” This was shared on social media on Sunday morning.
The specific cause of death hasn’t been revealed yet.
Emergency services responded to reports of Graham experiencing cardiac arrest at his home in Capitol Hill. According to audio picked up from a police scanner, emergency officials were called to the scene.
Recently, Graham returned from a trip to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the ongoing conflict with Russia. This visit underscored his role as a strong supporter of former President Trump.
A resident of Seneca, South Carolina, Graham had been serving in the U.S. Senate since 2003, succeeding the long-serving Strom Thurmond.
Throughout his Senate career, he held significant positions including that of chairman of the Senate Budget Committee.
Before his tenure in the Senate, Graham represented South Carolina’s 3rd District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003.
In addition to his political career, Graham served as an attorney in the U.S. Air Force and retired in 2015 as a colonel in the Air Force Reserve.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster described Graham as “irreplaceable” and referred to him as “our fiercest warrior.”
McMaster shared, “Peggy, our children, and I are heartbroken. Lindsey Graham is an irreplaceable man, South Carolina and America’s fiercest warrior, and a loyal friend. We grieve with Darling, his family, and his dedicated staff. May God hold him tenderly in the palm of his hand. We will never see another like him again.”
This is a developing story.
