South Carolina woman charged in death of teen with diabetes

A South Carolina woman is accused of giving a 17-year-old diabetic girl a milkshake, causing her death, authorities said.

Shir Lee Sweeney, 50, is charged with criminal misconduct against a child in the death of a child in August 2022, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

This girl was diagnosed with diabetes in June 2021. However, the girl did not show up for a follow-up appointment, even though medical staff told Sweeney that the girl needed insulin, the affidavit states.

Authorities said Sweeney was in charge of the boy's welfare but did not take her to medical appointments or administer insulin for more than a year.

In September 2021, the teenager was hospitalized with high blood pressure. Sweeney, the girl's guardian, was told that the girl's insulin was “not voluntary.”

On August 12, 2022, the boy began vomiting, but was not taken to hospital despite medical staff having previously advised that vomiting was a symptom of diabetic ketoacidosis. The next day, Sweeney called 911 to say the girl had been found on the bathroom floor.

Authorities say a dispatcher was heard saying on the phone, “I knew she wasn't supposed to drink the milkshake.”

The boy was taken to the hospital with excessive weight loss and high blood sugar. She later died. Her cause of death was given as hyperosmolar ketoacidosis due to diabetes and was listed as a homicide.

Investigators said Sweeney was charged with the boy's death because he exposed the girl to “an unreasonable risk of harm affecting her life, physical health, or safety.”
