South Korean Boy Band BTS Sets to Release Their First Complete Album in Four Years Following Successful Military Service

BTS Announces New Album and World Tour for 2026

Members of K-pop sensation BTS revealed plans for a new album set to release in spring 2026. This announcement comes as the group, which holds the title of the most internationally successful musical act in South Korea, prepares to return after fulfilling mandatory military service.

During a live broadcast, all seven members shared their enthusiasm, confirming a world tour to promote the upcoming album. It’s a significant moment since they paused their careers to answer their country’s call for military service. The band took a break at the peak of their popularity, a choice that wasn’t easy, as they felt a strong sense of responsibility.

RM expressed excitement about diving back into music, noting that the writing process would begin in earnest in July. He mentioned how the album would be the first as a complete unit and assured fans that their wait would indeed be worthwhile. Jimin added that he was thrilled to engage with fans again, emphasizing the connection they felt.

Interestingly, around 7 million fans tuned in to watch the live stream, a clear indication of the band’s enduring appeal. The overall vibe of the broadcast felt uplifting, a stark contrast to the one held before their hiatus in 2022. Back then, they announced their “offseason” shortly after a visit to the White House, where they discussed important issues like racism in society.

In that previous broadcast, RM shared feelings of stagnation, stating he felt somewhat like a machine after years of group activities. Jin echoed those sentiments, mentioning that he craved personal growth and wanted to explore his own interests outside of the group.

Though BTS hasn’t released an album in four years, some members, who completed their military service ahead of others, have ventured into solo projects. Despite the long break, the group has achieved remarkable milestones, including record sales before the holidays and groundbreaking nominations like their Grammy recognition.

In South Korea, military service is mandatory for healthy men, lasting 18 to 21 months. This obligation can complicate careers in the music industry, with some artists facing challenges post-service due to the time away from the spotlight or public scrutiny. BTS, however, managed to receive extensions that delayed their service until they turned 30, igniting a broader discussion about whether entertainers should receive similar exemptions as athletes.

Suga is the last member to complete his service, officially finishing on June 18. Each member has expressed gratitude towards the military and reflected on their experiences, with Jimin humorously admitting to feeling a bit awkward in front of the camera post-service.

As they reunited, RM shared his thoughts on how serving might not have been as intense compared to what many ordinary citizens go through, but he expressed appreciation for the freedoms their military protects, especially since Korea remains technically at war with the North.

His long-standing support for the military has sometimes provoked reactions from neighboring countries, but he’s always emphasized the historical context surrounding the Korean conflict and the sacrifices made by many.
