Record high tides in Maine washed away three historic fishing cabins dating back to the 1800s, providing the backdrop for countless photos.

Michelle Erskine said she visited Fisherman's Point on South Portland's Willard Beach on Saturday and took video of the last two wooden cabins sliding into the ocean.

“Oh no! We're both going. Oh no!” she can be heard saying in the video.

Erskine, who has lived in South Portland his entire life, said his son had senior photos taken at the cabin and wedding parties often visited the cabin.

Famous fishing cabins such as this one in South Portland, Maine attract residents and tourists alike. Three historic fishing huts dating back to the 1800s were washed away by record high tides.

“It's a really sad day for the community and the residents of South Portland,” Erskine said in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday. “History is just being swept away.”

The cabin is owned by the city of South Portland and had just been repainted in October.

These fishing cabins were the last in a series of fishing cabins built before the city's incorporation, first built along the shore and then moved to their newest location in the 1880s. Erskine said it once housed lobster traps and fishing gear. A previous storm in 1978 destroyed two cabins.

A record storm surge of 14.57 feet was measured in Portland, Maine, just after noon Saturday, adding to what was already the highest tide this month, National Weather Service meteorologist Michael Sempa said. This broke the previous record of 14.17 feet, set in 1978, and was the highest since measurements began in 1912. Chenpa said the tide gauges measure the difference between high tide and average low tide.

The waves flooded some homes in Old Orchard Beach and Kennebunkport, Maine, and Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. The incident occurred just days after a previous storm damaged one of Maine's most beloved lighthouses in the state area.

“Very unfortunately, all three fishing shacks at Willard Beach were completely destroyed,” the city wrote on its Facebook page.

But the South Portland Historical Society said on social media that it had prepared for such an event last year by commissioning architects and engineers to create drawings, adding, “If we were to prepare to build a replica of the cabin, May everything be in order.” Is required. ”

The association is seeking donations for reconstruction.
