SOUTHCOM reveals fatal operation against suspected 'narco-terrorists' under new task force

Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere Strikes Suspected Drug Vessel

The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) reported that its forces executed a significant operation against a suspected drug boat, resulting in the deaths of two individuals identified as “narco-terrorists.” This strike was conducted by the newly formed Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTF-WHEM) on August 23, 2026.

In a statement released on Monday, SOUTHCOM detailed the strike, which targeted a low-profile vessel operating along recognized narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific. The command noted that intelligence confirmed the vessel’s direct involvement in drug trafficking activities.

“Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere executed a lethal kinetic strike on a low-profile vessel operating along established narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific,” the command stated. “The operation resulted in the deaths of two narco-terrorists,” it added.

Earlier in the month, the Joint Task Force-Southern Spear (JTF 84-2), which had been actively engaged in operations against suspected drug traffickers, transitioned into the new Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere.

“When I ordered the establishment of Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere, it was precisely for this purpose: to accelerate, synchronize, and execute lethal actions against these destabilizing narco-terrorist networks,” commented General Francis Donovan, the SOUTHCOM Commander. “Let me be clear, we will not permit narco-terrorists to operate with impunity in the Western Hemisphere, nor will we allow their deadly poison to reach American communities,” he emphasized.

The newly established task force combines military resources with those of the Americas Counter Cartel Coalition (A3C), which was formed earlier this year. A3C consists of multiple countries in the Western Hemisphere working collaboratively to enhance security and combat narcoterrorism and trafficking.

“Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere is SOUTHCOM’s action arm for confronting threats across the hemisphere,” Donovan said.

According to reports, during the almost year-long operation of Joint Task Force Southern Spear, at least 67 vessels were attacked, leading to the deaths of over 221 individuals.
